The Garden Route is one of the favourite destinations along South Africa’s coastline, with the greater Knysna area regarded as the jewel in the Garden Route's crown. Located midway between the cities of Cape Town and Port Elizabeth, Knysna is perfectly situated as a base from which to explore its outlying areas, as well as the rest of the Garden Route and sections of the Klein Karoo.

Knysna reclines on the banks of its famous estuary, cradled between the sparkling waters and mysterious, ancient, indigenous forests. Protected from the deep ocean waters by the imposing, sandstone Knysna Heads, the area also consists of towering mountains, sprawling acres of Cape fynbos and a natural system of lakes. As part of the Garden Route National Park, Knysna lies at the heart of the Lakes Section.

This extensive natural playground, paired with a temperate climate (summer temperatures average a comfortable 27°C while winter enjoys an easy average of 14°C), makes Knysna an outdoor enthusiast's paradise.

Take a horse ride through the indigenous forest, followed by a visit to the Millwood goldfields. Try your hand at mashie golf or take a cruise through the Knysna Heads. Join a moonlight meander and explore our fascinating inter-tidal zone with your flashlight, or take a daylight stroll along Brenton Beach to spot some whales and dolphins. Visit one of the five al fresco markets in the area, and then grab your mountain bike for a ride into the forests. Enjoy snorkeling in the estuary before taking a walk through historic Knysna. Then quench your thirst by going for a tour of Mitchell's Brewery. Explore the beach and castles at Noetzie or visit the Rastafarian community before taking advantage of our incredible fishing waters. Spot the elusive Knysna Loerie amongst Knysna's abundant bird life and watch the sunset from the Eastern Head viewpoint.

And then, if you have time before dinner, indulge in some world-class shopping. Speaking of dinner, Knysna offers something for everyone's taste buds. From our famous oysters and delicious seafood, our restaurants offer hearty fare to five star dining experiences, including a variety of world cuisines.

We invite you to use this site to not only book your accommodation, but to explore every aspect of what Knysna has to offer you – our most welcome guest.
